What is folding box board?
Folding boxboard is a multi-layer paperboard with a coated outer surface engineered for high-quality printing.
The structure runs through several distinct layers.
A fully coated face built for sharp, accurate print, a thick core of chemical and mechanical pulp doing the structural heavy lifting, and a reverse side that’s either cream and uncoated or coated white, depending on the grade.
The multi-layer construction serves a purpose.
It lets the board feel light in the hand while still standing up to the knocks of packing, shipping, and shelf life.
The pulp core packs in more volume per gram of fibre than a solid board at the same weight, so you get bulk without piling on grammage.
More volume per gram means a rigid box without a heavier board.

Choosing the right thickness and finish
Folding boxboard comes in a range of thicknesses, and the right one depends on what the packaging needs to do.

Crash-lock bottom boxes have a base that locks automatically when the box is opened out from flat.

Used where the tuck-end base construction would not be strong enough for the product, crash-lock is common in food packaging, gift packaging, and retail products with some weight to them.
Sleeve packaging
Sleeve packaging slides over a tray, insert, or container and presents the printed surface without a fully enclosed box.
