What is Shelf Ready Packaging?
If you are new to the packaging world, you are maybe wondering what retail and shelf ready packaging is.
Shelf ready packaging (SRP), sometimes called retail ready packaging or retail-ready packaging, is the outer case that holds your individual products together during transit and then becomes the display once it reaches the supermarket shelf.
Instead of store staff unpacking every box by hand, a perforated strip tears away and the remaining tray sits straight on the shelf with your products facing outward, ready to sell straightaway.
SRP and RRP (the two terms mean the same thing) are now standard across UK grocery.
If your brand is moving from independent shops into mainstream retail, you will be quickly asked about them.
At Custom Pack Studio, we design and produce custom retail and shelf ready packaging in our local Scottish facility.
We operate with a no minimum order policy, making us the ideal partner whether you’re just starting out or trialling a product in the retail space. And when your business is ready to scale, so are we.
What Shelf Ready Packaging Solutions Actually Do
SRP has a real job to do, and it has to do it at several different points in the supply chain.
The same packaging product has to protect your goods in transit, speed up shelf replenishment for the retailer, and generate sales in-store once it’s on display.
Not many packaging formats are asked to do all three at once.
Transport and Handling
A shelf-ready case needs enough structural strength to stack on pallets, survive forklifts, and hold its shape in the back of a delivery lorry.
The corrugated cardboard we use for shelf ready packaging is specified to match the weight and fragility of what’s inside. This means the case won’t collapse and your product won’t arrive damaged.
This transit to display journey is the single most important test for SRP, because packaging that gets there in one piece does its job and packaging that doesn’t costs you the listing.
Shelf-Filling
For your SRP to succeed on the shop floor, it needs to work just as hard for the person stocking the shelf as it does for the customer buying from it.
Your outer wrap should come off cleanly and quickly. Supermarket stockers won’t spend time wrestling with a tightly sealed case.
A well-designed SRP uses perforation lines that tear open with a single pull, revealing a neat, branded tray that can be placed straight onto the shelf without any fuss.
Standing Out
Now for the job that actually drives revenue.
Once your SRP is on display, it has to stand out and increase sales.
Visual disruption on a crowded supermarket shelf is what tells a shopper your product is there, and research from the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) shows that well-designed branded packaging achieves visual disruption that directly contributes to generating sales in-store.
That means bold colour, sharp print, and innovative packaging that ensure your packaging reflects who you are as a brand.
We can even supply your retail packaging for a completely streamlined process.
Why Scottish Brands Choose Custom SRP with Custom Pack Studio
Most shelf ready packaging on the UK market is made to generic specifications by large packaging manufacturers that want long print runs and steady repeat orders.
This model works fine if you’re a household brand that ships millions of units a year. But for smaller producers who are trailing their products or making a name for themselves, flexibility is key.
Custom Pack Studio takes a different approach.

As an independent Scottish packaging manufacturer, we create packaging for a number of smaller brands that need custom packaging without the minimum order restrictions that traditional suppliers demand.
Our packaging experts build bespoke packaging solutions that are fully customisable and designed around your specific packaging needs, not a standard catalogue. And our design team works with you to develop SRP that fits your specific products, carries your branding, and meets the requirements of whichever retailer has just said yes to your range.
Whether you need a single print run of 200 cases or a larger order of several thousand, we handle both.
Being based in Scotland matters for lead times too.
When a retailer asks for delivery in four weeks, you don’t have time to wait for cases coming from overseas or stuck in a queue at a larger factory. We produce shelf-ready packaging in Irvine and deliver across Scotland and the rest of the UK, so your packaging reflects your brand and arrives when you need it and where you need it.
Types of Retail Packaging Solutions and Corrugated Packaging We Produce
Shelf ready packaging is not one standard format.
There are several different configurations depending on the size and weight of your products, the shelf space available, and the retailer’s specifications.
We produce custom SRP in all the formats below, tailored to your specific requirements.
Tray-Style SRP With Tear-Away Top
This is the most common format for food, drink, health, and beauty products.
The full case has a perforated line around the top third, which tears away to leave a tray containing the products. The tray front is printed with your branding and acts as a mini billboard on the shelf.
Tray-style SRP works well for bottles, cartons, tubs, pouches, and anything that benefits from being displayed upright. It’s the format you’ll see used for most grocery shops.

Wrap-Around SRP
Wrap-around cases form tightly around the products with no loose space, using a crash-lock bottom and a perforated top section.
They use less board than tray-style SRP, which makes them more cost-effective for high-volume lines and also reduces the amount of packaging waste generated.
The print quality can match anything you’d see on a premium folding carton.
Display-Ready Outers
For smaller products like confectionery bars, sachets, or single-serve items, a display-ready outer sits on the shelf as a display unit rather than being unpacked.
The front panel is fully printed and the lid tears away to expose the products for the shopper to take.
Corrugated SRP With High-Quality Print
Where budget allows, we produce SRP with high-quality print finishes including flexographic printing direct onto the corrugated board, or lithographic print laminated onto the outside of the case.
Litho-laminated SRP gives you photographic-level print quality for brand positioning where the visual impact really matters, while flexo printing is more cost-effective for larger runs with simpler designs.
Shelf Ready Packaging for Scotland’s Key Sectors
Scotland produces some of the most recognisable food, drink, and consumer goods in the UK, and each sector has slightly different SRP requirements. Custom Pack Studio works across all of them.
Food and Drink
Scotland’s food and drink sector is worth over £15 billion to the economy.
From oatcakes and shortbread to sauces, snacks, and ready meals, food SRP needs to be food-safe (we hold BRC Global Packaging certification at High Hygiene level), carry clear product information, and protect perishable or fragile items.
Our design team understands the specifications that major grocery chains ask for. This means we can produce SRP that meets their requirements the first time rather than going through multiple rounds of rework.
Health, Beauty, and Personal Care
Health and beauty brands operate in one of the most visually competitive sections of any supermarket.
SRP for this sector has to carry strong branding, communicate product benefits, and sit tidily alongside dozens of products competing on the same shelf.
Supplements and Nutrition
For supplement brands, shelf appeal is critical.
Shoppers make quick decisions based on brand trust and visual clarity, and your SRP needs to convey both.
We produce premium packaging for Scottish supplement brands that looks professional, meets regulatory labelling requirements, and ships flat for efficient storage.
Sustainable Packaging and Eco-Friendly SRP
Sustainable packaging is no longer a nice-to-have.
Supermarkets are under pressure to reduce packaging waste and meet their own sustainability targets, and they’re increasingly asking suppliers to prove that their SRP meets those standards too.
All our shelf ready packaging is made from FSC corrugated board.
This means the fibre is sourced from responsibly managed forests. The board is fully recyclable through standard kerbside collections, and we can incorporate recycled content where the specification allows.
We’re also aligned with the UK’s packaging extended producer responsibility (EPR) rules. This rewards packaging that is recyclable and penalise packaging that isn’t, so choosing recyclable SRP from the start keeps your compliance costs lower and your sustainability story simpler.
If you need to meet sustainability targets for your retail listings, our team can work closely with you to produce packaging solutions that reduce board weight, remove unnecessary components, and still deliver the shelf presence and durability your products need to thrive.

Shelf Ready Packaging Scotland: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between shelf ready packaging and retail ready packaging?
In practice, there’s no meaningful difference. Shelf ready packaging (SRP) and retail ready packaging (RRP) are used interchangeably in the UK packaging industry, and both refer to packaging designed to go straight onto the retail shelf without being unpacked.
Can you produce SRP for a small first order?
Yes. We have no minimum order, so even a first run of a few hundred cases is something we can help with. This matters if you’re trialling a new product line or entering a retailer for the first time and don’t want to commit to thousands of units before you know how it will sell.
Is your shelf ready packaging recyclable?
Yes. All our SRP is made from FSC corrugated cardboard and is fully recyclable through standard collections. We can also incorporate recycled content into the board where the specification allows, helping you meet sustainability targets and lower your EPR costs.
Do you supply SRP to the rest of the UK or just Scotland?
Both. We’re based in Scotland, but we supply brands across the whole of the UK. Our location gives us a quicker turnaround for Scottish customers, but we regularly ship to clients in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland too.
