retail packaging scotland

Getting a product onto a retail shelf is hard enough. But getting a product that customers will actually pick it up is a different challenge entirely, and that is where your packaging does most of the heavy lifting.

Walk down any supermarket aisle or browse the shelves in an independent shop, and you will notice something. The products that catch your eye first are almost never the cheapest or the best known. They are the ones with packaging that stops you mid-step.

Colour, shape, texture, and shelf presence all play its part. And they happen before a customer reads a single word on the box.

At Custom Pack Studio, we design and manufacture retail packaging for brands across Scotland. Artisan food producers in the Highlands. Cosmetics companies in Edinburgh. Craft spirit brands in Glasgow. We work with all of them.

Whether you need shelf-ready trays for a supermarket listing, branded packaging for an independent retailer, or display packaging for a trade show, we produce it all right here in Scotland.

Our no minimum order policy means you can order high-quality custom packaging on terms that suit your business. And when you are ready to grow, Custom Pack Studio will be there to support you every step of the way.

What retail packaging solutions needs to achieve

Retail packaging is not the same as shipping packaging.

A postal mailer needs to survive the journey. But retail packaging has to do that and then sell your product once it arrives.

On a shop shelf, your box is competing with every other product in the same category. You have roughly seven seconds before a customer decides whether to pick it up or move on.

That means your retail packaging needs to protect the product during transport and handling, communicate your brand clearly at point of sale, and meet the practical requirements of the retailer stocking it.

Fall short on any of those, and it does not matter how good the product inside is. If customers aren’t picking it up to try it out, they will never know how great it is.

Get your audience excited with Custom Pack Studio’s bespoke retail packaging solutions.

Types of retail packaging we produce in Scotland

Retail product packaging covers an extensive range of formats.

The right choice depends on your product, your retail environment, and how much shelf space you have to work with. We produce bespoke packaging in all of the formats below, tailored to your specific requirements.

Folding cartons and product boxes

These are the standard retail boxes you see in health shops, department stores, and specialist retailers. Reverse tuck-end boxes, crash-lock bottom boxes, and auto-lock cartons all fall into this category.

They arrive flat, assemble quickly, and give you full control over the print and finish on every panel. The board is durable and protective, keeping your product safe through the supply chain while still looking sharp at point of sale.

Custom Pack Studio-Supplement Packaging

Shelf-ready packaging

Shelf-ready packaging (sometimes called retail-ready packaging or SRP) is designed so a retailer can place the entire case on the shelf without unpacking individual products. The outer packaging opens or tears away to become the display itself.
Supermarkets and larger retailers increasingly require SRP because it speeds up stocking and reduces waste. If you are supplying Tesco, Sainsbury’s, or any major grocery chain, shelf-ready packaging is likely a condition of your listing.

Sleeves and bands

A printed sleeve wraps around your product or its primary container, adding branding without replacing the existing packaging. This works well for multi-packs, gift sets, and products where you want to add a seasonal or promotional message without redesigning the entire box.

Sleeves are quick to produce and easy to swap out when your campaign changes.

Gift boxes and presentation packaging

Scotland’s food, drink, and craft sectors do a lot of gift trade, especially around Christmas and Burns Night.

A rigid gift box turns a product into a gift without the customer needing to wrap it themselves.

For whisky, gin, hampers, artisan food, and premium skincare, premium packaging carries as much perceived value as the product inside. The attention to detail in the box, the weight of the board, the finish on the lid, all of this sets the tone before the customer sees what they have bought.

Retail packaging for Scotland’s key sectors

Different industries have different requirements when it comes to retail packaging, and our expert team works across all of them.

We understand the unique packaging challenges and regulations in every sector, so your package is always safe, compliant, and ready to impress.

Food and drink

Scotland’s food and drink industry is worth over £19 billion.

Whether you are producing artisan cheese, oatcakes, confectionery, sauces, or baked goods, your packaging needs to be food-safe and carry the correct labelling while competing on a crowded shelf.

We hold BRC Global Packaging certification at High Hygiene level. This means your packaging is manufactured under controlled conditions with full traceability, and it satisfies the due diligence requirements that retailers will ask about before listing your product.

Whisky, gin, and craft spirits

Scotland produces some of the most recognisable spirits in the world, and the packaging plays a direct role in how those products are perceived.

From single malt whisky presentation boxes to craft gin cartons, spirits packaging needs to balance premium feel with practical protection.

Foil stamping, embossing, soft-touch lamination, and heavyweight board all help create packaging that feels worth the price point. Scotland’s whisky and gin producers need this level of innovation because the bottle alone does not tell the full story.

And for limited editions or cask-strength releases, we can produce short runs without the bulk minimums that traditional packaging companies demand.

Bespoke Use Case 2

Health, beauty, and cosmetics

Cosmetics packaging needs to look sharp, feel tactile, and protect products that are often fragile.

Custom cartons for skincare, haircare, perfume, and beauty accessories can be finished with spot UV, metallic inks, and textured coatings that give them genuine shelf presence.

If you are selling through major retailers, the packaging is part of the buying decision.

Get it right and it sells itself. Get it wrong and the buyer moves on to the next shiny brand on the shelf.

Artisan and indie brands

If you sell at farmers’ markets, craft fairs, or independent shops across Scotland, your retail packaging is doing your marketing for you. It tells customers who you are and whether your product feels worth the price.

You do not need a massive budget to get custom packaging that works at retail level. Our no minimum order policy means you can start with a small batch and scale up as your presence on shelves grows.

That is a cost-effective way to test the market without the risk of committing to pricing on thousands of units you might not need yet. And it also gives you the flexibility to scale up whenever you are ready.

High structural strength

Designing retail packaging that sells

The difference between packaging that sits on a shelf and packaging that sells from a shelf is rarely about the product inside. It is almost always about how the box looks, feels, and communicates from a distance.

Shelf appeal and first impressions

Shelf appeal is the visual impact your packaging makes from two or three metres away. Before anyone picks up your box, they need to notice it. Strong colour contrast, a clear product image or icon, and clean typography all play into this.

We can help you test how your chosen design will perform in a retail context before you commit to a full print run. This helps stop the guesswork for your official launch.

Keeping your branding consistent across channels

Your retail packaging should look like it belongs to the same family as your website, your social media, and your other marketing materials.

Matching colours, consistent logo placement, and the same tone of voice across every touchpoint.

A customer who discovers your product in a shop and then looks you up online should feel like they are dealing with the same brand.

Layout and information hierarchy

The front panel sells. The back panel informs. Side panels handle the regulatory detail.

Trying to cram everything onto one face is a common mistake, especially for brands with a lot of compliance information to include.

We can help guide you through the packaging design if you need a little extra guidance on how to create the perfect packaging product.

How the box feels in your hands

What a box feels like matters more than most brands realise.

A matte laminated surface feels different to a gloss one. Soft-touch coating makes people hold the box longer, and embossed lettering invites touch.

These details may be small, but in a retail environment where customers are comparing products that are literally side by side, they add up.

Sustainable packaging and materials

Every box we produce can be 100% recycled.

But not only that, Custom Pack Studio is FSC and PEFC certified. The board and paper we use can be traced back to responsibly managed forests through an independently audited supply chain.

For retail packaging specifically, sustainability matters because retailers increasingly ask for evidence that your packaging meets their strict environmental standards. By having FSC or PEFC logos on your packaging, you can verify your claims.

By choosing to partner with Custom Pack Studio, you can help support the move away from single-use packaging and EPS (expanded polystyrene). These commonly used materials are difficult to recycle and often contribute to long-term environmental waste.

Choosing more sustainable packaging alternatives is a practical step towards reducing impact and creating a more responsible packaging approach.

We do not use plastic laminates or coatings that would prevent recyclability unless there is a specific food-safety reason. And if that situation ever comes up, we will always talk you through the options first.

Why a Scotland-based packaging manufacturer matters

When your packaging supplier is based in the same country as your business, things move faster, cost less to deliver, and the environmental impact is reduced.

We manufacture everything at our facility in Irvine, Ayrshire.

For customers across the Central Belt, that means shorter lead times, lower logistics costs, and the option to visit the factory and see proofs in person before committing to production.

We deliver across Scotland and the rest of the UK. For quick turnarounds and a local customer service team which is just a call away when you need to make a change or update to an order.

Our parent company, KennedySmith (Press) Ltd, has been a reliable packaging manufacturer in Scotland since 1997. Their knowledgeable production team and decades of experience inform everything we do, from structural design through to print quality and finishing.

When you work with us, you are dealing directly with the people who make the boxes, which makes a real difference when timelines are tight or adjustments are needed during production.

No minimum order for retail packaging

Most packaging suppliers set minimum orders of 500 or 1,000 units. That is fine if you are an established brand with predictable retail volumes.

It does not work so well for businesses that are just getting started in retail, testing a new product line, or supplying small independent shops where you might only need 50 boxes at a time.

We have no minimum order on any of our retail packaging. You can just as easily order one box or ten thousand.

That flexibility is particularly useful for seasonal ranges, limited editions, and market-testing new products before scaling up. You do not need to fill a storage unit with boxes before you know whether the product sells.

Protective packaging for retail products

Retail packaging does not just need to look good. It needs to keep your product safe from the packing line to the shop shelf. That means considering how the box handles stacking, how it behaves in transit, and whether it protects against moisture, dust, or impact.

For fragile items, we can build internal fitments, inserts, and dividers into the box design so your product stays secure without needing bubble wrap or loose fill. This improves packing efficiency for your team and reduces the amount of protective packaging your customer has to deal with at the other end.

If your product ships direct to consumer as well as going to retail, our protective packaging specialists can design packaging that works across both channels.

One box that performs on a shop shelf and survives a courier journey means less complexity in your operation and fewer SKUs to manage.
