Sustainable Packaging for Small Businesses
Guide to Product Packaging Designs

What most UK packaging suppliers actually sell

A merchant is a supplier of packaging materials rather than a manufacturer.

The leading packaging names buy in volume, hold it at a distribution centre, and pass it on with trade pricing once your quantities climb. Their catalogues run to thousands of lines. Stock depth is what you’re paying for, and it’s worth it when you need a box tomorrow.

Their shelves hold plain boxes in various sizes, packaging tape by the case, and enough pallet wrap and strapping to keep a warehouse running. Stocking that much product is the whole business model, and they’re good at it.

What a catalogue can’t do is make you something that doesn’t exist yet. Your product goes into the nearest size up, and your branding is whatever fits on a label.

Where a stock catalogue starts costing you money

The gap between your product and the nearest stock size has to be filled with something. You pay for void fill and cushioning you wouldn’t otherwise need. Then you pay again on volumetric weight, the courier’s price for the space a parcel takes up.

Online retailers feel that hardest. Every order leaving a fulfilment operation carries the same avoidable padding, and returns creep up when a product has room to move in transit.

Your customer notices too. A plain box with a sticker does the job and nothing more, while a competitor’s mailer arrives printed inside and out. A padded envelope is worse again, because your name never appears on it at all.

Custom packaging supplies made to your product

We start from the product rather than a catalogue page. Send us the dimensions or a sample, and we’ll build the cutting shape around it. The fit is right on the first run.

Every job is custom-designed and printed in-house. Because we mix ink and hold board stock ourselves, the colour on your reorder matches the colour you signed off. You choose the board weight, the structure, the print and the finish.

Customisation here goes well past dropping a logo onto a template. Worried you’re too small to order custom packaging? You’re not. One box for a photoshoot runs on the same high-quality board and the same press as ten thousand for a national listing.

The printed packaging products we make

Everything below is made to your specification. Our full range of packaging products covers the structures most UK businesses need.

Postal and mailer boxes

Our postal boxes are the workhorse for anyone shipping direct to customers. A corrugated mailer protects the contents through the courier network. The crash-lock base folds flat, then locks itself as you open the box out.

Print the inside and your customer sees your brand the second the lid comes up, instead of bare brown board. Mailing bags are cheaper, but they can’t do that, and they won’t protect anything rigid.

Cartons, sleeves and wallets

Folding cartons are what sits on a retail shelf.

The standard shape is a reverse tuck-end carton, where the flaps tuck in from opposite directions so the pack stays square. A slide-on sleeve or a fold-around wallet suits a product you want partly visible, and both use less board than a full carton.

Tapes, tissue and labels

Printed paper tape seals a box and brands it in one go. It recycles still attached to the cardboard, with nothing to peel off first. We print tissue paper and labels too.

If you’re already buying packaging materials elsewhere, printed tape and labels are usually the cheapest way to get your name on them.

Sustainable packaging without the greenwash

Eco-friendly packaging nearly always comes down to using less material. We’d rather say that than sell you an environmentally friendly swap that changes nothing.

Everything we make is 100% recyclable, and the board carries FSC or PEFC certification, so the forest it came from is managed and audited. Those are claims we’ll stand behind, and you can read how we source our board in full.

Where a project calls for compostable materials we’ll source them.

For most cardboard work, though, plain recyclable board has the lower environmental impact and a kerbside route your customer already understands.

Swapping plastic tape for paper, dropping a laminate, or moving to a reusable outer are the changes that shift the number.

A biodegradable claim on a plastic film shifts nothing, and sustainable packaging nobody can recycle at home isn’t worth paying extra for.

Expert packaging design and customisation

Not every business has a designer on hand. Packaging design carries technical requirements ordinary graphic work doesn’t cover, starting with the flat cutting shape your artwork has to sit on.

Bleed is another: artwork has to run past the trim line, or a white edge shows once the box is cut. Fold allowances stop print cracking on a crease.

Our packaging experts will set up artwork you already have, or design the pack from scratch when there’s nothing to start from. Prefer to do it yourself? The online design tool and our templates are there.

Expert packaging advice costs nothing at quote stage, and when a simpler or cheaper structure would do the same job, we’ll say so.

Buy packaging online, delivered across the UK

You can buy packaging online through our design tool, or send a brief and get a quote back from a person. Both routes finish the same way, with a proof for you to approve before anything runs.

Made-to-order work isn’t a next-day delivery product, and any supplier promising you next-day on printed packaging is selling you stock. Runs are measured in working days, and we give you a firm date when we quote.

Our delivery services reach every postcode across the UK from Irvine. Samples go out quickly, and finished work is dispatched by pallet to your unit, distribution centre or fulfilment partner.

Packaging for food, retail and regulated products

Food and drink is where the paperwork actually matters. Our site holds BRC Global Standard for Packaging Materials certification at High Hygiene level, so our cartons can touch product directly. A carton without it has to sit outside a sealed inner bag.

The certification covers dry goods, bakery, confectionery and coffee, and it’s the standard UK retailers work to. If you’re aiming at a retail listing, sort it early, because retrofitting compliance after artwork sign-off is expensive.

Beauty and supplement brands want practical packaging that looks right on a shelf and still arrives undamaged. Pharmaceutical work needs tamper-evident closures. Jewellery, electronics and subscription box businesses come to us for fit and finish instead.

How ordering works

  1. Tell us about the product. Send dimensions, a photo, or the product itself. We’ll tell you which structure fits.
  2. Get a quote. A price and a lead time, with no minimum quantity attached and no obligation.
  3. Artwork and proof. Use your own designer, our design team, or the online tool. Nothing prints until you approve the proof.
  4. Production and delivery. We make it in Irvine and deliver it to you anywhere in the UK.

Packaging supplier UK questions

What types of packaging supplies do you offer?

We make printed cartons, postal and mailer boxes, sleeves, wallets, gift boxes and shelf-ready packaging, plus printed tape, tissue and labels. We don’t sell stock consumables. For bubble wrap by the roll, refuse sacks, or heavy-duty industrial packaging, a merchant will serve you better.

Is there a minimum order?

No. We’ll run a single box or a full pallet of them, and the unit price falls as the quantity rises. Small runs are welcome here. Plenty of UK packaging suppliers won’t take them at all.

Can I get a sample before committing?

Yes. We’ll make a physical sample so you can check the fit against your actual product before you commit. Get the size wrong on a run of five thousand and you pay for the whole lot again.

Do you do bulk discounts or credit accounts?

Pricing improves with volume on every product, and we quote repeat customers on that basis. Ask about account terms when you enquire and we’ll tell you what’s possible.

Where are you based and do you deliver nationwide?

We manufacture in Irvine, North Ayrshire, and deliver across the whole of the UK. Because production stays in Scotland, there’s no customs paperwork and no import wait on your order.

Can you help if I have no artwork?

Yes. Our design team can create the packaging design from scratch, work from a rough sketch, or tidy up files a previous supplier left you with.

Is your packaging recyclable?

All of it. Board is FSC or PEFC certified and everything we make goes in the household paper stream. Compostable options exist where they’re the right call for the product.
