What is Sample Packaging?

High structural strength - what is sample packaging

Ordering 500 custom boxes is a big commitment.

The structure, the dimensions, the paperboard weight. None of this comes across fully in a digital proof.

That’s where packaging samples come in.

A packaging sample gives you something physical to hold, fold, and put your product inside before the full production run starts.

Sample packaging, in the context of custom printed boxes and cartons, is a pre-production version of your intended packaging produced before any large quantity goes to print.

What is a packaging sample?

A packaging sample is a working version of your custom box, sleeve, or folding carton, made to your actual specification and, where applicable, your actual artwork. The purpose is to let you assess the real result before approving the full order.

The phrase “sample packaging” gets used two ways.

In the food and cosmetics industry, it refers to the miniature formats used in product sampling campaigns. The sachet, vial, or pouch that contains a trial portion of the product.

In a packaging supplier context, a packaging sample is a physical specimen of the box or carton you plan to order. As packaging experts, we are going to cover the later.

A packaging sample checks that your product fits inside, that the board weight gives the right structure, that the format performs in transit, and that the finish reads as you intended.

Ink on actual paperboard can look different from a screen proof, and production at scale makes any mishap between the two pricey to fix.

Types of packaging samples

There are different types of sample types when approving a custom made format.

Which type you request depends on whether you still need to confirm structural fit, the printed result, or both.

Plain samples

Plain samples, sometimes called blank or structural samples, show you the box format and construction without any printing.

You get the correct dimensions and folding structure, so you can check fit, confirm your product sits correctly inside, and assess the outer packaging before any artwork goes near a press.

For e-commerce brands and anyone sending products via courier, plain samples are a useful first step for testing performance in transport and transit while the design is still being finalised.

Because no print file is involved, this type of box sample typically has a quick turnaround.

Fully printed samples

A fully printed sample combines your actual packaging design with the finished structural specification.

You get a specimen that matches the look and feel of the product packaging your customers will receive, complete with your brand colours, typography, and chosen finish applied to the real board.

Printed samples are the format most brands request before a product launch, because colour and finish can only be properly assessed on the actual board.

Label placement and typography also read differently at scale, and the unboxing experience your customers will have is difficult to predict from a flat design file.

A fully printed sample also makes a useful presentation piece for in-store buyer meetings or product photography before your full order arrives.

Why request a packaging sample before your full order?

A packaging sample is a cost-effective way to catch issues before they are multiplied across an entire production run.

Problems with colour, material weight, adhesive performance, or dimensions are cheap to fix at sample stage and expensive after a full order has been produced.

But not only that. Printed samples lets you photograph your packaging boxes for marketing materials before the full order arrives.

You can show a physical version of your brand’s packaging to wholesale buyers and confirm that the finish you specified reads correctly in different lighting conditions, including under fluorescent in-store lighting.

Testing under real conditions matters too.

Pack your product inside the sample and apply some pressure to the outer packaging.

You will see quickly whether the type of packaging board weight handles the kind of stress a courier delivery involves, and whether the adhesive holds as expected. For liquid products, this step confirms seal integrity before your packaging goes into full production.

What to check when your packaging sample arrives

Once a packaging sample arrives, work through these checks before approving the full order:

  • Place your product inside and check it sits correctly without too much movement or pressure.
  • Fold the base and confirm the structure holds without creasing or splitting. On crash-lock formats, check the base lock engages cleanly.
  • Check colour consistency across all panels. Look for bleeding or misregistration against your specification.
  • Assess the matte, gloss, or soft-touch finish under several different light sources, including the type of retail lighting it will be viewed under.
  • Check that typography is crisp. Fine typeface weights can fill in slightly if the specification is not matched exactly.
  • Press and release the glued areas. The adhesive should hold firmly with no lifting at the edges.
  • If your product requires absorbent material or internal padding, confirm the interior holds it correctly before transit.
  • Apply courier-type pressure to the outer packaging and check the structure does not compress further than expected.

If anything needs adjusting, you have saved yourself from a mistake in the full order run!

Frequently asked questions about packaging samples

What is a packaging sample?

A packaging sample is a physical version of your intended custom box, sleeve, or carton, produced to your specification before the full order goes to print. It lets you check dimensions, structure, print quality, and finish before approving production.

What is a packaging sample turnaround time?

Turnaround depends on the sample type and whether your artwork is ready. Plain structural samples are produced faster than fully printed samples. Build sample review time into your product launch plan so that any amendments do not hold up your launch date.

Do I need a minimum order quantity to get a packaging sample?

Custom Pack Studio has no minimum order quantity, for samples or for full orders. You can order a single printed sample, test a short run, or scale to a larger order when you are ready to commit.
