Your formula might be better than every competitor on the shelf. But if your packaging looks generic, forgettable, or cheap, most people will never find out.
The packaging is the first thing a customer sees, and in many cases, it is the only thing they use to decide whether your product is worth picking up.

Why supplement packaging design matters more than you think
Supplement customers are sceptical by default. They know that not every product lives up to its claims.
Your packaging is the first dose of trust your brand delivers, before a single capsule is swallowed.
Professional, well-designed packaging signals quality.
It tells the customer that the brand behind the product cares about details, which makes them more likely to believe the product itself has been carefully formulated.
A cheaply printed label on a generic bottle sends the opposite message, no matter what is inside.
If your supplement packaging looks good in a customer’s hand, on their kitchen counter, or in a flat lay photograph, it becomes free marketing every time someone posts about it. That kind of organic reach is hard to buy, but easy to earn with good design.
Know your customer before you design anything
The biggest mistake supplement brands make with packaging is designing for themselves instead of their customer.
A fitness brand selling pre-workout to gym-goers needs completely different packaging from a brand selling prenatal vitamins to expectant mothers. The colour palette, the typography, the imagery, the tone of voice on the label, all of it should reflect who is buying the product and what they care about.
Start by asking a few questions.
- Is your customer male or female, or both?
- Are they young and fitness-focused, or older and health-conscious?
- Do they buy in shops or online?
- Are they motivated by performance, by wellness, by clinical evidence, or by lifestyle aspiration?
- Are they eco-conscious?
A protein powder aimed at serious athletes might use bold colours, strong typography, and aggressive branding.
A daily multivitamin for women over 40 might use softer tones, clean lines, and a calmer visual identity. Neither approach is wrong.
But using the athletic look for the multivitamin (or vice versa) would confuse the customer and weaken trust before they have even read the label.
Colour psychology in supplement packaging
Colour is the first thing the eye registers. Before your customer reads a single word on the label, their brain has already processed the colour of your packaging and formed an impression.
Choosing the right colour palette is one of the most effective ways to communicate what your product is about without saying a word.
Green
Green communicates health, nature, and organic ingredients.
It is the default for plant-based supplements, greens powders, and anything that wants to signal natural or clean formulations. The risk is that green is overused in the supplement space, so if you go with it, make sure your shade and design execution are distinctive enough to avoid blending into the crowd.
Blue
Blue conveys trust, reliability, and calm.
It works well for clinical or science-backed supplements where you want the customer to feel confident in the evidence behind the product. Think joint health, omega-3s, and pharmaceutical-grade formulations.
White and neutral tones
White and cream tones suggest simplicity, purity, and transparency.
This approach works particularly well for direct-to-consumer brands where the packaging needs to feel modern and uncluttered.
Bold and vibrant colours
Bright oranges, yellows, and reds can work for energy-focused products, pre-workouts, and supplements aimed at younger demographics.
They create shelf presence and grab attention, but they need to be balanced carefully so the packaging does not look cheap or gimmicky.

Typography and label design
The fonts you choose and how you arrange information on the label can make the difference between packaging that looks professional and packaging that looks like it was put together in a rush.
Readability comes first.
Your product name, the supplement type, and the key benefit should all be readable at arm’s length. Use a clear, confident typeface for the product name and avoid decorative fonts that sacrifice legibility for style.
Information hierarchy matters too.
A well-designed label guides the eye through the information in the right order, rather than presenting everything at the same size and weight.
White space is your friend.
It is tempting to fill every millimetre of your label with text and graphics, but cramped packaging feels overwhelming. Leaving breathing room between elements makes the label easier to read and gives the overall design a more premium feel.
Choosing the right packaging format
Stand-up pouches
Stand-up pouches are the fastest-growing packaging format in the supplement industry.
They offer a large, flat surface for custom printed designs, and they stand upright on shelves, giving your branding maximum visibility.
Pouches work particularly well for protein powders, greens blends, collagen peptides, and any supplement sold in powder or granule form. They are also lighter than bottles, which reduces shipping costs for e-commerce brands selling direct to consumers.
They can even be made with paper, for a more environmentally friendly package.

Bottles and jars
Plastic or glass bottles remain the standard for capsules, tablets, and softgels. They offer strong product protection and a familiar format that consumers trust.
For e-commerce businesses or to stand out more on a shelf, Custom Pack Studio provides carton boxes and shipping boxes for your bottles and jars.
Bottles with child resistant lids are great for supplements that should be kept away from children.
Sachets and stick packs
Single-serve sachets are ideal for products designed to be taken on the go or mixed into drinks.
They work well for collagen powders, electrolyte blends, and pre-workout supplements. Each sachet is a small branding opportunity, and a box of individually designed sachets can create a strong visual impression when the customer opens the outer packaging.
We can help supply and design the box to put these sachets into, for the ultimate opening experience.
Cartons and boxes
Custom folding cartons give you the most design flexibility of any supplement packaging format. A printed carton can include detailed branding, product information, usage instructions, and regulatory text across multiple panels, all while protecting the product inside.
Cartons also create a premium unboxing experience for DTC supplement brands, where the moment the customer opens the box is a chance to reinforce your brand identity.
Printing finishes that make a difference
The finish on your packaging can turn a good design into something that feels genuinely premium.
These are the details that customers notice when they pick up your product, even if they cannot explain exactly why one package feels more expensive than another.
Matte finish
Matte gives packaging a soft, modern feel. It is popular with clean, minimalist supplement brands and works well with neutral colour palettes. Matte finishes also reduce glare under shop lighting, which can make your packaging easier to read on the shelf.
Gloss finish
Gloss makes colours pop and gives packaging a vibrant, high-energy look. It suits bold designs with bright colour palettes, and it photographs well under studio lighting for product shots and social media content.
Spot UV
Spot UV applies a glossy coating to specific areas of the design (your logo, a key graphic, or the product name) while leaving the rest of the surface matte. This contrast creates a tactile effect that you can feel when you run your fingers over the packaging. It is one of the most effective ways to add a premium touch without increasing costs dramatically.
Embossing and debossing
Embossing raises part of the design above the surface, while debossing presses it into the material. Both create a three-dimensional effect that adds texture and tactile interest. They work well for logos, brand names, and decorative elements on cartons and rigid boxes.
Foil stamping
Metallic foil (gold, silver, rose gold, or holographic) applied to specific elements of the design creates a luxury feel. It is effective in small doses, on a logo, a border, or a product name, but can look overdone if applied too broadly.
UK labelling requirements you cannot ignore
However good your packaging design looks, it still needs to comply with UK food supplement labelling regulations.
Supplements are classified as food products under UK law, and the labelling requirements are specific.
Your packaging must include the name of the food (including “food supplement”), a full ingredients list with allergen declarations, the names and amounts of active ingredients per dose, conditions for use, a statement that the product is not a substitute for a varied diet, storage instructions, a best before date, and the business name and address of the food business operator.
The challenge is fitting all of this mandatory information onto your packaging without it overwhelming the design. That is where information hierarchy and smart label layout become so valuable.
A design consultation at the packaging stage can help you plan a layout that meets every regulatory requirement while still looking clean and professional. We are always happy to answer whatever questions you may have about packaging.
