What is Supplement Packaging

What is Supplement Packaging

If you are launching a supplement brand in the UK, the product inside the bottle matters. But the product packaging around it matters just as much.

Your supplement packaging is what health-conscious customers see first, what keeps the product safe during shipping, and what tells them whether they can trust what is inside.

And for supplement brands selling in the UK, packaging is not optional decoration. It is a legal requirement with specific rules about what you must include on the label, how the product must be sealed, and what information customers need before they buy.

Why supplement packaging matters more than you think

Supplements are consumable health products. People put them in their bodies.

That changes the stakes compared to packaging a candle or a phone case.

The packaging needs to do three things at once: protect the product, communicate clearly, and comply with UK food law.

Protection

Vitamins and supplements degrade when exposed to moisture, oxygen, light, and temperature changes.

These external factors affect the quality and effectiveness of the active ingredients inside. A capsule sitting in a poorly sealed container will lose potency long before its best-before date.

Good supplement packaging acts as a barrier against moisture and other threats, keeping the contents stable from the production line to the customer’s kitchen cupboard and maintaining freshness throughout the product’s shelf life.

Moisture is the biggest risk for most solid supplements like tablets, capsules, and powders. Oxygen causes oxidation in ingredients like fish oils and certain vitamins that degrade quickly. Light can break down compounds in products stored in clear containers.

Choosing the right packaging material and format addresses all of these, which is why it is worth getting right from the start.

It is also important for supplements that should be kept away from children to incorporate child resistant features.

Branding and shelf appeal

Walk into any health food shop and look at the supplement aisle.

Dozens of products sit side by side, most of them offering similar formulas. The packaging is often what separates the brand a customer reaches for from the one they walk past.

Make sure it stands out.

Your supplement packaging design communicates product quality, trustworthiness, and brand personality before anyone reads the ingredients list.

A brand logo printed with clean typography, considered colour choices, and a professional finish signals that the brand behind the product takes things seriously. That kind of brand recognition builds customer loyalty over time.

Compliance

In the UK, food supplements are regulated under the Food Supplements (England) Regulations 2003 (with equivalent legislation in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland).

The Food Standards Agency oversees compliance, and the rules are specific about what must appear on supplement packaging.

Supplement packaging options for different supplement types

The packaging format you choose depends on what is inside. A powder needs different packaging to a capsule, and a liquid needs something different again.

Here are the most common packaging types and what they work best for.

Bottles

The most widely used format for supplements.

Plastic bottles (typically HDPE or PET) are lightweight, cost-effective, and work well for tablets, capsules, softgels, and gummies.

Glass bottles and glass jars are heavier and more expensive but offer an excellent barrier against moisture and oxygen, which makes them a good choice for premium brands or sensitive formulations like liquid supplements and oils.

Most supplement bottles use a screw cap with an induction seal underneath. The induction seal is a foil membrane heat-bonded to the bottle opening that proves the product has not been opened before purchase.

Pharmaceuticals Use Case

Blister packs

Blister packaging uses individual plastic cavities sealed with a foil or card backing.

Each tablet or capsule sits in its own pocket, which provides excellent protection from moisture and oxygen because the product stays sealed until the moment someone pushes it through the foil.

Blister packs also help with dosage.

Customers can see exactly how many tablets are left, and daily dose packs make it easy to track usage. They tend to cost more per unit than bottles but offer superior product protection and a more premium feel on the shelf.

Sachets and stick packs

Single-serve sachets are popular for powder supplements, drink mixes, and granulated formulas.

Stick packs are common for collagen powders, electrolyte mixes, and on-the-go supplements that customers add to water.

The advantage of sachets is portion control and convenience. Each sachet contains one dose.

This removes any guesswork for the customer and helps ensure your supplements reach them in the right quantity every time.

Sachets also work well for subscription models and sample packs, because you can send a few without committing to a full bottle.

Stand-up pouches

A stand up pouch is a flexible pouch with a flat base that stands upright on shelves.

Stand-up pouches are lighter than bottles, use less lightweight materials, and offer high-barrier protection with laminated film.

A resealable zip closure keeps the contents fresh between uses, and pouch packaging offers generous flat panels for branding and nutritional information.

Kraft-lined pouches are popular with eco-conscious supplement brands looking for a natural, visually appealing finish. food supplement packaging mockup

Cartons and secondary packaging

Many supplement brands use a printed carton as secondary packaging around the primary container.

A bottle of capsules might sit inside a custom-printed box, for example.

The carton serves several purposes.

It provides extra space for branding and regulatory information, protects the bottle during shipping, and creates a more premium presentation.

For blister packs, the carton is often the main packaging that customers interact with, since the blisters slot inside.

Here at Custom Pack Studio, we specialise in custom carton packaging. These are recyclable goods which help your brand stand out and showcase your commitment to sustainability.

UK labelling requirements for food supplements

If you are selling supplements in the UK, your packaging must comply with specific labelling rules.

This is where a lot of new brands trip up, especially if they have been reading US-focused guides that reference FDA regulations and “dietary supplements.”

The UK has its own framework, and the terminology is different.

For example, in the UK, some supplement products must be labelled as a “food supplement,” not a “dietary supplement.” That distinction matters because it determines which regulations apply and how trading standards officers assess your packaging.

What must appear on UK supplement labels

Under the Food Supplements Regulations 2003 and Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 (retained in UK law), your label must include:

  • The name “food supplement” clearly displayed
  • A list of ingredients, with common allergens emphasised (usually in bold)
  • The amount of each vitamin, mineral, or active substance with a nutritional or physiological effect
  • The recommended daily dose, with a warning not to exceed it
  • A statement that food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet
  • A warning to store the product out of reach of young children
  • The name and address of the food business operator (or importer, if applicable)
  • A best-before or use-by date
  • Batch number or lot marking for traceability
  • Net quantity

All of this information must be clearly legible and easy to understand.

It can appear on the label, on the packaging itself, or on a label visible through the packaging.

If you are designing a supplement carton yourself, you will need to plan your layout carefully to fit all the required text alongside your branding.

Or if you are worried about packaging rules in the supplement industry, Custom Pack Studio’s design team will be more than happy to guide you through the process for compliant products.

Safety features for supplement packaging

Because supplements are ingestible products, safety packaging is not just a nice-to-have.

Customers expect it, retailers require it, and depending on the product, regulations may demand it.

Tamper-evident packaging

Tamper-evident seals and features show the customer that the product has not been opened or interfered with before they buy it.

Common options include shrink bands around bottle caps, breakaway caps that snap when first twisted, and induction seals bonded to the bottle opening under the cap. These safety standards are expected by both retailers and consumers.

For cartons, a perforated tear strip or glue-sealed flap serves the same purpose.

The customer can see at a glance whether the packaging has been previously opened.

Child-resistant closures

Not all supplements require child-resistant packaging, but products containing iron or certain concentrated ingredients may need it.

Push-and-turn caps are the most common child-resistant closure for supplement bottles.

If you are unsure whether your product needs one, check with your formulator or the Food Standards Agency guidance for your specific ingredients.

Desiccants

Small desiccant packets are placed inside supplement bottles to absorb moisture and keep the contents dry.

Cotton wadding is sometimes used alongside desiccants to prevent tablets from rattling and breaking during transit.

Both are standard for tablets, capsules, and any solid supplement that could degrade in humid conditions.

Custom printed supplement packaging for your brand with Custom Pack Studio

Most of the big supplement packaging guides are written for brands ordering hundreds of thousands of units.

But what about your packaging needs if you are launching a new supplement line with a few hundred units, or testing a new product before committing to a large run?

This is where custom printed packaging makes a real difference.

You might be buying stock options like generic bottles from a packaging wholesaler, but a custom-printed carton with your brand logo and custom designs around that bottle transforms it into a branded product that looks like it belongs on the shelf next to the market leaders.

At Custom Pack Studio, we produce custom cartons with no minimum order quantity.

We offer a variety of sizes and colours, branding options, and customisation options to match your supplement brand exactly.

That means you can order 50 printed supplement cartons for a product trial, 200 for a trade show, or 5,000 for a retail launch, all with the same quality print and finish. We offer tailored solutions for your specific needs, whether that is a simple carton or a full packaging range.
